Starting off with Game Maker:
Did you download game maker and you dont know what to do? Let me tell you what I did: First or all, I looked at the Help section that came with game maker and I read other taterials. Then, I looked at the game maker examples and I tried to learn from the games as much as I could. Then I went to the Game Maker website and I downloaded some more games that where were editable and I learned from them as much as I could. After that I took the basic games from the excamples and I tried to make games like those. First I started with very simple games like pacman and after that I made a platform game, Mario's Quest and now I am working on RPGs or role playing games which are very hard to make.
Starting off with making Pacman
Start with game maker by making an easy game, A very siple version of Pacman. Before you start making a game you need to think what excactly you want in the game. In pacamn, you want a round object that moves around when you press the aroow keys. It gets points by eating dots and it goes to the next level by eating a lolypop. In the game we also want monsters going around and when pacman crashes or touches the Monster it looses A life. That is what I call a simple version of pacman. NOW LETS GET STARTED!!!.
Lets start off by getting all the sprites or pictures we need for the game. The sprites dont do any thing but we cant have a game with out them so... First open up Gamemaker and/or go to File, New. Now lets begin by right clicking on the word sprites and selecting add a sprite. Now click on load sprite and no matter where you are go to the sprites folder which is under: Local Disk C, Program files, Game_maker4, sprites. Once you are in the Sprites folder dubble click on the Pacman folder. Please remember what you did untill now it will be comenly used through out your use of Game Maker. Now through doing this prosses over and over again you should have these sprites: bonus, dot, monster 1, all the pacmans, sceared and wall. You should rename them all starting with spr for sprite and then there file name, but you dont have to. No you have done getting all the sprites you need.
Now lets move on to sounds. A good game has sounds but sounds is what makes games so big so its your choice if you want sound or not. If you are planning on getting sounds for your game right click on the work sounds and go to add sounds. click on load sounds and you should sownload these sounds and name them SO YOU CAN REMEMBER!!!: download: any of the beeps, glass_break and applause. dont forget NAME THEM SO YOU CAN REMEMBER.
We have got everything we need to make the game its self so lets get ready and here comes that hard part. First did you miss anything, need some help e-mail me and I will help you personaly.
Now lets get going, first lets maker a wall. right click on objects and go to add an object. A totally new screen pops up, right? good. On the left hand side of this screen you see the word solid with a box next to it and visible right below it with a checked box. Now by checking in the silid box too. Now, on top of it you see the word: "sprite:" click on it and a list pops up, select the box sprite with the picture of the box next to it. Before you get out of that screen on the top left you should see "Name:", name it box. OK, Now press on the okay botton that is on the bottom, left hand side of the screen. Again, open up a new object, if you forgot i will tell you one more time, right click on objects and select add an object. Now, do not select the solid option but i do want you to select the sprite so, click on the list botton next to the word sprite and select the monster sprite.
